Sport Rehabilitation
Sport enables veterans to rediscover a purpose and thereby build their confidence, irrespective of their physical or psychological injuries. The Sport Rehabilitation programme is often the first programme that veterans new to SWV will undertake and gives back the camaraderie and sense of support that many had lost on leaving the military.
Through the help of the annual Ski-habilitation Week, veterans can engage in the charity’s programmes moving toward training, occupation and employment, with the support of a mentor. This supportive and engaging programme also introduces them to peers that are on a similar journey, with a joint understanding of the difficult situations each veteran has faced.

Pain Management
Chronic pain remains one of the main barriers that holds back veterans from achieving their full potential and finding purpose after leaving service. To help tackle the issues that come with chronic pain - such as over-medicating, lack of understanding around appropriate medications and ongoing support - SWV arranges for veterans to have their medication reviewed by one of the UK’s top pain specialists.
SWV also offers a Pain Management Programme, ensuring that veterans have a number of different approaches to manage their pain, helping smooth the transition towards rehabilitation and employment.

Mentoring
All SWV veterans are paired with their own Mentor who they work with directly, helping them to look ahead and set goals, tackle challenges and help them to pursue and achieve the life they want to lead. This long-term and personalised support acts as a golden thread through the charity, connecting veterans with opportunities and advice, helping veterans continue to progress and receive the help they deserve.
Veteran Support Network
Accessing health services and government support is often a complex and stressful experience for veterans. With the help of our Veteran Support Network, veterans can be advised and equipped with the support they need to navigate a world of compensation, pension and support payments. The programme ensures that veterans receive peer-to-peer support and guidance that helps them unlock their future.

Rivers’ Forum
Many veterans live in rural areas around the UK, the Rivers’ Forum was set up in an effort to offer opportunities for training and employment for veterans within the conservation and environment sector.
Led partly by veterans, the Rivers’ Forum unites leaders from government, industry, academia and charities to tackle the UK water pollution crisis and showcases the contribution that veterans can make. It fosters collaboration and innovation in river conservation and water quality while developing veteran employment opportunities.
The Rivers’ Forum 2025 will take place from Tuesday 13th – Wednesday 14th May at Lillibrooke Manor, Maidenhead SL6 3LP.

Medical Trials
Effective PTSD treatment has remained elusive since it was named "Shell shock" in the First World War. Existing therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) have a much lower success rate in veterans, with only a 30% chance of effectiveness. New medical trials, however, offer hope for real change.
Supported by NHS England, and working in conjunction with MAPS (The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London we delivered the UK’s first MDMA-Assisted therapy trial.
Published results from international trials of MDMA-Assisted therapy shows an efficacy of 68%. We are now working with international partners to fund further trials, requiring an additional £2m.
